Elul 16: Pray

I love to pray. And I find that having a regular, daily prayer practice keeps me aware of God’s Presence in my life.

But my favourite prayer time is neither in a synagogue nor part of the daily required prayers. It’s when I put my children to sleep.

Only the youngest of my three still opts for me to put him to bed. The others? On rare occasions. But it is that quiet, alone time with my little son that brings me the closest to God.

We snuggle. He tells me things. We share stories. I put lavender oil on his forehead. I tuck in him and his menagerie of lovies. And we sing the Sh’ma.

It’s a ritual years in the making. It is comforting. God’s Presence is palpable in those brief moments and he turns over to sleep, knowing that although I have left the room he is not alone.
