Is That a CPAP in Your Bag…or are You Just Happy to See Me?

Travelling without any of the kids is a delight. Unencumbered, I can get to where I need to go at my own pace. I can eat where I want to eat, browse at the newsstand, and find my way to my gate without having to worry about losing anyone. And there is way less stuff. Because kids travel with a lot of stuff.

So I am now in SoCal for my dad’s final Shabbos with his shul. I left this morning with a checked suitcase, a purse, a personal item, AND…my CPAP machine.

That is a lot of stuff.

However, the CPAP cannot be checked through because it’s too fragile. And my other items are things that I would also not want to check (meds, jewelry, iPad, etc.).

TSA pulled me aside to do an ETD sampling of the contents of my CPAP. That would be an Explosive Trace Detection sampling.

I refrained from telling the stern-looking TSA lady that the only exploding that might be of concern is what comes after a night of forcing continuous air inside of me while I lay sleeping.

Smart move, huh??

Because I am unaccustomed to travelling with the CPAP, and because I’m confidant that my insurance company would be very displeased if I left it in the overhead compartment, I needed a reminder.

It worked. I remembered the CPAP. My insurance company won’t have to deal with the consequences of my overall spaciness. And we are all happy.

Those sticky notes sure do come in handy, don’t they? Any interesting uses you have for them? Maybe you write the name of a loved one and stick it on the back of something that you plan to give the when you die. My Grandma, z”l, was known far and wide for that.

I forget what punishments I’ve given Shayla. So I have sticky notes in the drawer with “no iPod”, “no tv” and “no computer already written on them. When I tell her I’m taking one of those items away I pull out the sticky note and put it on the desk so I don’t forget what i’ve taken away later in the day.

I keep a sticky note inside the cover of my siddur with the names of people I’m davening for and they line the edges of my desktop monitor at work with things to do!

Oh, it might be easier to list the few instances in which I DON’T use sticky notes. They are a lifesaver for my middle-aged memory!

My MIL uses a CPAP, and when she travels for longer periods, she will rent one in her destination. Kind of a hassle, but sometimes easier than traveling with it. I hope it’s helping lots!
